Composite Cylinder and COPV Design & Qualification Engineer

Lead the product-specific engineering of composite cylinders and composite-overwrapped pressure vessels, from requirements definition and preliminary design through analysis, verification and qualification support. This position requires dedicated pressure-vessel expertise. General composite-design experience alone is insufficient.

Responsibilities

  • Translate product requirements into pressure-vessel design specifications.
  • Assess liner architecture, end-fitting interfaces, dome geometry and composite reinforcement concepts.
  • Develop or review pressure-vessel structural designs within the candidate's competence.
  • Coordinate laminate definition and process-compatible reinforcement strategies.
  • Work with structural analysts on stress distribution, failure modes and safety margins.
  • Assess the implications of pressure, temperature, fluid compatibility and service conditions.
  • Define material and manufacturing requirements.
  • Coordinate pressure-vessel manufacturing development and process verification.
  • Establish product-specific validation and qualification plans.
  • Coordinate proof, burst, pressure-cycle, leak and other applicable tests with competent facilities.
  • Evaluate damage tolerance, inspection requirements and relevant failure mechanisms.
  • Maintain design records, technical justifications and qualification evidence.
  • Identify applicable standards, regulations and customer requirements for each product.
  • Coordinate external specialists where the product requires expertise outside the internal team.

Essential qualifications

  • Degree in mechanical, aerospace, materials or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience with composite pressure vessels, gas cylinders or closely related pressure-containing structures.
  • Understanding of pressure-vessel structural behaviour and composite reinforcement.
  • Experience with design validation, pressure testing or product qualification.
  • Ability to develop technical requirements and coordinate specialist testing.
  • Strong technical documentation and risk-assessment skills.
  • Candidates must identify which vessel architectures and qualification environments they have personally worked with.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Type III or Type IV cylinders, COPVs, hydrogen storage, high-pressure gas systems or space hardware, according to the intended product programme.
